"Here, the personal narrative is used to address a universal question, that of the trap that can close on a woman, literally and figuratively, in the light of a dual psychological and mythical context. The story begins with two personal accounts. On the one hand, the story of my older sister Barbara, considered rebellious by my parents and locked up in a psychiatric hospital for most of her adolescence. When she was eighteen, on a day out, she threw herself under a train. I also had two personal stays in a psychiatric hospital in London in 2002, the first to escape the trap of drug addiction and the second to protect myself from my depression, which had itself turned into a painful trap. The theme of the trap is also woven through the parable of Saint Barbara, patron saint of architects, miners, firefighters and other fire-related guilds, as she protects them from lightning and firedamp.
The author: Nan Goldin was born in Washington in 1953 and had her first exhibition in 1973 with black and white photographs of drag queens."
