Okamura was known for his "humanist" perspective, focusing on the impact of war on ordinary people and soldiers, often capturing intimate, quiet moments rather than just action scenes.

He was the first Japanese journalist to cover the Vietnam War continuously, with his work published in Life magazine as early as 1964, earning him comparisons to Robert Capa.

In 1965, he achieved a major scoop by spending 53 days with the Viet Cong to document the war from their side, aiming to "see with Japanese eyes" rather than relying on Western perspectives.

After being banned from South Vietnam for his reporting, he later moved to Ireland, where he documented the Troubles.
